A RECENT survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations research group revealed that a little more than half of the country believes that mining should be given a chance. (Inquirer, 4/28/06) Perhaps, the question should have been phrased “Does mining deserve a second chance?”
In another spell of national amnesia, we are forgetting that we already gave mining a chance to employ and enrich the nation. And, for decades, mining companies were allowed to operate and undertake extraction activities across the country, from the Cordilleras to Mindanao. After those long years of mining, which saw many disasters, among them the Marcopper Mining tragedy in Marinduque province, the Filipinos are no richer for their troubles. (more…)
