AS A BICOLANO and an unabashed pro-mining advocate, I have been following the Rapu-Rapu story with great interest.
I spent the better part of last Tuesday at Rapu-Rapu. I was the guest of longtime friend Sonny Dominguez who is now the chief executive officer of the place.

I took the early morning PAL flight to Legazpi. From Legazpi, I took a pleasant one and a half hour ferryboat ride to Lafayette’s mining operations in Rapu-Rapu Island.

In the air-conditioned, well-appointed main office (I felt I was in an Ayala Avenue office), I went through a three-stage Power Point briefing conducted by three lovely Bicolanas (this was the part I enjoyed the most). (more…)

Negros Occidental, Philippines (AHN) - Philex Mining Corp., one of the
biggest mining companies in the Philippines is studying the possibility
of resuming operations in its Bulawan gold mine to take advantage of the rising prices of gold in the global market.

Bulawan mines, located in central Negros Occidental started operations
in 1996 but was closed down in 2002 because of lower gold prices during

PHILEX Mining Corp said it is looking into the possibility of reopening
its Bulawan gold mine in the central province of Negros Occidental in light of rising prices of the precious metal.

The mine was operated from 1996 to 2002 by Philex Gold Philippines Inc,
a wholly owned unit of Philex Gold Inc, which is a subsidiary of
publicly-listed Philex Mining. It was shut down because of lower gold

On-Going Drilling Program at Canatuan

CALGARY, ALBERTA - TVI Pacific Inc. (”TVI”) (TSX:TVI) announced today
that it has filed a National Instrument 43-101 (”NI 43-101″) report on SEDAR (www.sedar.com) in respect of the Sulphide Project at the Canatuan mine, located in the Philippines. The report was prepared by Qualified Persons Craig Acott and Ian Perry of Norwest Corporation (”Norwest”), a specialized consulting company providing services to the mining and energy industries. The NI 43-101 report relates to TVI’s May 26, 2006 news release, which summarized the key points of the Canatuan Sulphide Project feasibility study prepared by Norwest. The Canatuan deposit is wholly owned by TVI’s affiliate, TVI Resource Development (Phils) Inc. (”TVIRD”).

Filipino Bishop Arturo Bastes has expressed disappointment at a decision to allow an Australian mining company responsible for two cyanide spills in the Philippines last year to recommence operations.

Authorities suspended operations of Lafayette Mining Ltd in November after the company twice released mining waste with traces of cyanide, a chemical agent used in extracting precious metals from the mineral ore, killing fish in nearby waterways.

Bishop Bastes, who headed a Fact Finding Commission on mining appointed by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, last week called for the closure of Lafayette’s open pit mining and mineral processing operations in Rapu-rapu island in Albay province. (more…)
