A remote municipality deep in the mountains of Maco, Compostela Valley, is coming back to life years after the mothballed Apex Mining was taken over last year by Crew Gold, which is based both in Canada and Europe.

Hundreds of local residents are now employed. More have put up small businesses. Medical service has been upgraded, saving many a life in the past few months alone. School facilities, long decrepit, have been spruced up. Pupils are now shuttled for free to and from class 10 kilometers away. Modern conveniences and basic services are now taking root. (more…)

Legal Resources Centre Media Release

July 26 2006

The land claims court today ordered the Anglo Platinum to return ancestral land to the Ga Mawela community - see more detail below.

The Ga Mawela community consists of about 200 households from the poorest area of Limpopo Province, South Africa.

Anglo Platinum is the largest platinum mining company in the world, and is 74,5 percent owned by Anglo American plc, one of the largest mining conglomerates in the world.

This brings to closure a five year battle between the community and Anglo Platinum - and its subsidiary company Rustenburg Platinum Mines.

The court ordered that the Department of Land Affairs negotiate with the Rustenburg Platinum Mines to purchase the land - if possible, by agreement, otherwise by expropriation.

Legal representative of the community, Ms Durkje Gilfillan says: “Although this is not a precedent in the strict legal sense, the case has set a precedent for the mining sector under which a mining company, in this case Anglo Platinum, must manage its mineral rights and mining interests in such a manner that it does not conflict with the rights and interests of other land users. This will ensure that there is a balance of rights and interests for the benefit of both parties, which did not exist under previous mining legislation.” (more…)

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/25 July) — China is looking at potential “multibillion” investments in Mindanao, including $3 billion in mining in the next five years once cooperation is formalized in the region, Chinese ambassador Li Jinjun told reporters Tuesday. Li identified “huge business opportunities” for Mindanao in tourism, agriculture, fisheries, mining and infrastructure after Sec. Jesus Dureza, of the Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCo), and other trade and investment officials briefed him on Mindanao’s peace process, the BIMP-East Asia Growth Area, and investment opportunities in Davao City and Mindanao.

Li said many Chinese investors have eyed investments here but are just waiting for developments because they were worried about the “little and incorrect information” they know about Mindanao. He said China is concerned about the peace processes in Mindanao and said they are happy to see progress in the peace talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). (more…)
